Abstract

The elderly has different needs compared to other age groups in the society, and these needs have not been paid attention to in urban areas. According to the concept of inclusiveness of urban spaces, the elderly is also one of the interested groups in the society, which has not been studied much on their presence in public environments. This research aims to investigate the factors affecting the formation of the form and geometry of urban spaces, in order to increase the presence of the elderly in such places. In order to conduct this study among different neighborhoods in the elderly-friendly metropolis of Shiraz, Sardar Jangal neighborhood was selected as a statistical sample for quantitative analysis due to the larger population of elderly people in region 1. According to the conceptual framework of the study, the data in three areas of security, physical characteristic and society have been statistically analyzed. In the inferential analysis using Friedman's test, the self-esteem and respect index is the highest and the familiarity index is the least favorable for the presence of the elderly in the neighborhood. The comparative comparison of the results with previous studies showed that the two variables of happiness and hope, which are among the sub-fields discussed in the discussion of the self-esteem of the elderly, have the greatest effect on the use of urban spaces by the elderly. In order to improve the current situation and increase the presence of the elderly according to the obtained results, strengthening the geometry of the spaces for the elderly to pause and gather, paying attention to the skyline derived from the form and geometry of the buildings in the alleys leading to the main streets of the neighborhood is suggested.
