Identifying and Classifying the Dimensions Influencing the Quality of Urban Pedestrian Streets in Iran: A Systematic Review of Domestic Studies (2001–2024)

Abstract
The rapid pace of urbanization, growing automobile dependency, and the erosion of the human scale in urban design have made it essential to reconsider the role of pedestrian spaces. The pedestrian street is not merely a corridor for movement but a realm for interaction, experience, and the reconstruction of urban identity. Despite extensive domestic research on walkability, no indigenous framework has yet been developed for assessing the quality of pedestrian spaces in Iran. This study identifies and classifies the key dimensions influencing the quality of Iranian urban pedestrian streets and proposes a conceptual model for their context specific evaluation. Adopting a qualitative approach, the research employed a systematic review based on PRISMA guidelines. A total of 163 research titles were retrieved from three Persian databases. After screening with the CASP checklist, 61 studies qualified for thematic analysis. Data were examined through a combined deductive–inductive approach and frequency indexing. Findings showed that the quality of Iranian pedestrian streets results from the dynamic interaction among four main dimensions: physical–qualitative, social, cultural–historical, and economic. The strongest synergy appeared between physical and social dimensions, reflecting a shift from “design for movement” to “design for experience and presence.” The final output was a four dimensional conceptual model with 125 sub indicators integrating physical, perceptual, behavioral, and cultural aspects. Walkability in Iran has evolved from a hardware oriented concern to a human centered and perceptual practice, where improving urban quality depends on understanding form, culture, and society—the transition from a “physical logic” to a “human logic,” making the pedestrian way a stage of human presence in the city.
