Abstract
"Urban development during the Umayyad era of Al-Andalus was not merely a physical and demographic process; rather, it functioned as a tool for consolidating power, organizing space, and representing the civilizational identity of the Umayyad Caliphate, deeply intertwined with the exigencies of geopolitics and culture. The present study aims to elucidate the urban development model of Córdoba during the Umayyad period and analyze the role of geopolitical and cultural factors in the formation, continuity, and dynamism of the city. Adopting a historical-explanatory approach and drawing upon historical, geographical, and cultural sources, this research analyzes data through a causal-explanatory method. The theoretical framework is based on the integration of concepts from political geography and cultural geography within the scope of urban development studies.
The primary research question asks: What role did geopolitical and cultural factors play in the urban development of Córdoba during the Umayyad era? The findings indicate that Córdoba’s strategic position within the communication and political network of Al-Andalus, its favorable climatic conditions, access to natural resources, and the cultural interactions between Islamic, Roman, and indigenous traditions were among the most significant factors influencing the city’s formation and sustained urban development. Furthermore, the spatial and cultural policies of the Umayyad Caliphs, through the institutionalization of Islamic civilizational and cultural components, fostered social cohesion, cultural dynamism, and the political authority of Córdoba. Consequently, the urban development model of Córdoba can be viewed as the result of a synergy between geopolitical and geocultural factors, which established the city as one of the most prominent civilizational centers of the Islamic West. The results suggest that the selection of Córdoba as the Umayyad capital was based not only on political considerations but also on geographical, cultural, and spatial capacities that were conducive to sustainable urban development."
