Abstract
Vandalism is one of the deviant behaviors that resulted from the rapid growth of urbanization, development of communication, and increasing socio-economic and psychological problems of the modern world. Given the importance of urban nature, both from an environmental and social-economical aspects, and limited studies in this field, despite its destructive phenomenon, the purpose of the present study was to identify environmental and qualitative factors that reduce nature's destructive behaviors in public spaces, and present executive strategies to improve the status quo by examining its relationship with three groups of variables: configuration system, physical status of urban nature, and environmental design. For this purpose, after studying the previous literature and identifying the research criteria, the selected samples has been studied in the stages of comparative analysis of spatial maps, using software UCL DepthMapV.10. The results show that 5 components of integration, connectivity, controllability, entropy coefficient and mean depth with respect to the space configuration system, two components of pristine or designed urban nature in relation to its physical structure, and the existence of human spaces and architectural construction and buildings, in conjunction with the environmental design component, are effective in promoting, controlling, or reducing the destructive behaviors of urban nature. That is, preserving the natural structure of trees, plants and other natural elements and minimizing human interference, preserving the urban environment against man-made environments, and striving for the optimal configuration of the space configuration system in order to increase public oversight of it, are effective strategies to protect urban nature.

Extended Abstract
Introduction
Rapid urbanization, the expansion of public spaces, and the intensification of social interactions in urban environments, despite their numerous benefits, have given rise to new challenges in the realm of social and environmental behaviors. One of the most significant of these challenges is vandalism, a form of deviant behavior that generates extensive negative consequences for the quality of public spaces, social security, and the sustainability of urban environments. Vandalism directed toward urban nature—particularly trees and green spaces—not only imposes direct economic costs but also leads to environmental degradation, a decline in spatial vitality, and the weakening of citizens’ sense of place and belonging. This issue has become increasingly critical in the current context, where cities are confronted with the impacts of climate change and escalating environmental crises.
A review of previous studies indicates that most research on vandalism has predominantly focused on individual, social, and economic factors, while environmental variables and spatial structure have received comparatively limited systematic attention. However, the quality of environmental design, spatial organization, and configurational patterns can either create opportunities for or impose constraints on the emergence of vandalistic behaviors. Space syntax theory, as an analytical framework, provides a valuable means of examining the relationship between spatial configuration and users’ behavioral patterns and offers significant potential for explaining the environmental causes of vandalism directed toward urban nature.
Accordingly, the aim of this study is to identify and analyze the environmental and syntactic factors that influence the occurrence or reduction of vandalistic behaviors toward urban nature in public spaces and to propose practical design strategies, with particular emphasis on the role of spatial configuration. The necessity of this research arises both from the lack of empirical studies addressing vandalism against urban nature from an environmental–syntactic perspective and from the growing importance of protecting urban natural assets in order to enhance citizens’ quality of life.
Method
This research is applied in nature and employs a descriptive–analytical approach. Data collection was conducted in two main phases. In the first phase, a comprehensive review of theoretical literature and previous studies related to vandalism, urban nature, and environmental design was carried out. In the second phase, field data were collected through direct observations, photographic documentation, and spatial analysis.
The study area is the Shahid Chamran linear park in Shiraz, which was selected as a suitable case study due to its supra-local significance, diversity of activities, combination of natural and designed landscapes, and high level of user presence. Spatial structure was analyzed using the space syntax method and UCL DepthMapV.10 software. Accordingly, an axial map of the study area was prepared, and syntactic indicators including integration, connectivity, controllability, intelligibility (disorder coefficient), and mean depth were calculated.
Simultaneously, field surveys were conducted to document behavioral and physical forms of vandalism affecting urban nature, and spatial distribution maps of these behaviors were produced. Subsequently, a qualitative and analytical comparison between syntactic maps and vandalism patterns was undertaken to examine the relationship between spatial configuration and vandalistic behavior. Data analysis was performed through comparative and interpretive methods, and the results were presented in the form of analytical tables, diagrams, and maps.
Results
The findings indicate that the syntactic structure of the Shahid Chamran linear park exhibits a moderate to low level of spatial integration. The mean integration value of 0.48 reflects the predominance of movement-oriented use over stationary activities and active user presence. The average connectivity value of 2.56 suggests a limited network of lateral connections and a reduced diversity of route choices along the axis. Spatial controllability, with an average value of 0.46, was found to be moderate, indicating a relatively uniform but insufficient distribution of opportunities for spatial control and social surveillance.
Moreover, the mean intelligibility (disorder coefficient) value of 3.71 reveals a dispersed development pattern and functional discontinuity in certain sections of the corridor, particularly toward its terminal areas, which is associated with increased spatial depth and reduced continuity. The comparison of syntactic maps with field observations demonstrates that vandalistic behaviors toward urban nature—especially physical damage such as harm to trees and vegetation—occur more frequently and intensely in spaces characterized by lower levels of integration, connectivity, and controllability, as well as in areas where designed nature is combined with built environments. In contrast, relatively untouched and natural areas, despite being subject to some forms of behavioral vandalism, exhibited lower levels of physical damage.
Discussion and Conclusion
The results of this study confirm that spatial configuration and syntactic qualities of public spaces play a decisive role in shaping or mitigating vandalistic behaviors toward urban nature. Spaces with higher levels of spatial continuity and integration tend to experience greater user presence, longer durations of stay, and enhanced natural surveillance, thereby reducing the likelihood of vandalism. Conversely, spaces characterized by greater spatial depth, limited connectivity, and dispersed functional patterns provide more opportunities for deviant behaviors to emerge.
Furthermore, the findings suggest that extensive physical interventions in urban nature and the prioritization of built structures over natural elements can significantly increase the vulnerability of urban trees and green spaces to vandalism. Accordingly, the research hypotheses concerning the significant relationship between spatial configuration, environmental design, and vandalism against urban nature are confirmed.
Based on the findings, it is recommended that the design of public spaces emphasize increasing spatial integration, reducing mean depth, avoiding dispersed development patterns, minimizing physical interventions in urban nature, and establishing clear hierarchies of access between natural elements and built environments. Conscious and informed spatial configuration can not only reduce vandalistic behaviors but also foster supportive and protective attitudes among citizens toward urban nature.
